Children's Flat Feet

In almost all cases children's flat feet are perfectly NORMAL and
no support is required. It is almost impossible to ascertain the
development or lack thereof of a longitudinal arch in children
without the use of a Harris mat impression or a computerized
pressure mat printout. Visual observation usually shows feet
with an apparent arch when not weight bearing but completely
flat during weight bearing. This is termed flexible flat feet and
simply means that the arch is not yet developed as it will be in
later life. To place such a foot in rigid shoes with a firm
longitudinal arch may not only offer no corrective value but
also be uncomfortable.

As a general rule, I advise that if the child is not symptomatic
(does not complain of pain or discomfort), arch supports are
just not necessary. Rather, parents and grandparents should
concentrate on fit when shopping for children's footwear. Look
for all the things you do when considering fit for the adult foot
and avoid the major mistake made when it comes to buying
children's footwear - buying too big. Too often I see allowances
for "grow room" that create seriously ill-fitting shoes that can
cause all sorts of major foot problems.

Finally, I need to mention that pain and discomfort are not normal.
Should a child complain of the same when it comes to their feet,
you should consult their physician in all cases.
