Lip Allergy Symptoms: Causes and Treatment for Allergy on Lips

There are a host of allergens that could trigger lip allergies, when they come in contact with the lip or the mouth. These allergens may be cosmetics (lipsticks, lip balms, foundation creams), shaving creams, certain foods, latex, or stings and bites of insects. Chemicals, dust, pollen, antibiotics, etc. can also cause swelling of the lips if one is is allergic to them.

Lip Allergy Symptoms

The following are the most commonly seen clinical manifestations of an allergy of the lip:

  • Itching of the lips.
  • Burning lips.
  • Swelling of both the lips.
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Tingling sensation in both lips.
  • Vesicular eruptions on the lips and around the mouth.
  • Red rash around the mouth.
  • There may also be certain associated symptoms like swelling of the eye lids, watery and running nose, etc.
  • Swelling in the throat and difficulty in breathing with swelling of tongue are also seen.

Causes of Lip Allergy

The commonly seen causes are contact with the offending material, such as lipsticks and lip balms in females, chemicals used in moisturizers, shaving creams used by men, food and food colors, bee stings and ant bites, antibiotics and other medicines.

Treatment of Lip Allergy

Finding the triggering factor for the lip allergy is the most crucial aspect of the treatment plan. It is very essential that you ascertain what is setting off the allergy in you. Once identified, it is prudent to steadily avoid the offending agent.

  • If it is a food allergen, avoid that specific food steadily.
  • Avoid using lipsticks and lip balms if they are significant causes of lip allergy
  • Swelling of the lip can be controlled by applying ice packs to the affected area for a few minutes; repeat this several times throughout the day till the symptoms abate.
  • Fuller’s earth is a good home remedy for lip allergy that has occurred due to insect bites. Mix a spoonful of fuller’s earth with a pinch of turmeric powder and make a paste by mixing in some water. Apply this paste on the lips. Remove after it dries off. Fuller’s earth appreciably decreases the swelling of the lips and relieves itching and pain as well.
  • Place cold tea bags on the lips when the lips are swollen and feel itchy; they are decidedly beneficial
  • Apply aloe vera gel on the lip, it is a soothing agent and helps reduce the swelling of the lips quickly.
  • In case the symptoms do not diminish or tend to get aggravated, you ought to contact your doctor immediately. He may give you antihistamines to reduce the lip allergy symptoms.
