Reasons for Missed Period, Menstruation Besides (Other Than) Pregnancy

A missed period triggers a lot of alarm and anxiety. There are several factors that could cause you to miss your periods. The following are the commonly occurring causes, apart from pregnancy.

Causes for Missed Period Other Than Pregnancy

  • Stress: emotional turmoil, strain and psychological stress can make one miss the period.
Recurrent and prolonged exposure to stress can have detrimental and lasting effects on the reproductive cycle.
  • Illness: falling sick can cause periods to be delayed. However, this is by and large temporary and the normalcy returns.
  • Change in Your Daily Schedule: changing routines, especially, if you go from day shifts to night shifts affect the menstrual cycle.
  • Change in Medications: if you change your remedy / medicines, particularly contraceptives, it may lead to missed period.
  • Overweight: obesity affects the menstrual cycle drastically. Nonetheless, women return to normal cycles after shedding excess weight.
  • Underweight: likewise, being anorexic or greatly underweight affects the periods. It may even result in amenorrhea, i.e. cessation of menses.
Also, excessive physical strain, working out and athletes may experience this.
  • Peri-Menopause: the transition phase from reproductive to non-reproductive is called peri menopause. Periods become somewhat irregular, lighter, and less frequent.
  • Menopause: Menopause, or when you no longer menstruate or ovulate is manifested as missed menses. Menopause occurs naturally at around 45 to 50 years, or may occur surgically, due to a hysterectomy or through chemotherapy.
