Abrasions Facts and Information

What are abrasions and what makes these abrasions occur? Here are few basic facts on abrasions that would be helpful to know:
  • An abrasion is a shallow, superficial, or surface wound that can be found on the surface of a person’s skin.
  • Abrasions seldom bleed and when they do, the bleeding is often very minimal and stops after a short while.
  • There are two main types of abrasions: the milder abrasions that are sometimes called grazes or scrapes and the deeper kinds of abrasions.
  • Milder abrasions seldom leave any scars behind, but deeper abrasions sometimes do.
  • A certain traumatic abrasion called an avulsion actually takes away all skin layers when a person becomes a victim to such an abrasion.
  • When a person gets an abrasion from a vehicular accident, this is referred to as a road rash.
  • Other similar abrasions that are brought about by slipping on rope is called a rope burn.
  • Abrasions that are caused by slipping on other surfaces other than the road are called friction burns.
  • When abrasion occurs due to a constant rubbing of the skin on a carpet or piece of cloth, carpet or rug burns are what these are called.
