What Are Allergies? Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Allergies

When asked what an allergy is, the usual answer would be that an allergy is the abnormal reaction of a person's body or immune system against a substance that is normally or supposedly harmless to the body. Here are a few other facts you should know about allergies:

  • People can be allergic to a lot of things like drugs, food, insect bites, and many more.
  • The allergic reaction that you see is the chemical reaction of the body to the supposed invaders of your immune system. This chemical reaction is what brings about the itchiness, runny eyes, difficulty in breathing, and other symptoms that indicate an allergic reaction to a substance.
  • You can easily mistake a common cold for an allergic reaction and vice versa; however, there are some telltale signs that can help you differentiate one from the other. When it comes to the occurrence of symptoms, for example, with a cold, you see these emerge one at a time, while when it is an allergic reaction, these all come out at the same time.
  • Allergic reactions often dissipate once the substance that caused the allergy is removed from your vicinity or from your system.
