A lot of people have seen actors and actresses in movies and on TV acting out scenes where they are said to have had amnesia. What exactly is amnesia and who usually gets amnesia? Is amnesia curable? Here are some facts about amnesia:- Amnesia is basically an ailment that causes a person to lose part or all of their memory.
- Amnesia is essentially a self-preservation mechanism that is activated when a person’s body or mind needs protection from traumatizing experiences, be it physical, mental, or emotional trauma.
- Some severe cases of amnesia syndrome not only makes a person lose his memory of certain events in his life, it also makes him forget who he is. Oftentimes, when a person falls victim to this kind of amnesia, he assumes the identity of another person sometimes with the help of suggestions from his surroundings or from others to help him continue living his life.
- Amnesia disease can be cured but will either require years of psychological therapy to help a person remember who he or she is or slowly recall parts of their past to rebuild into memories and into who they really are.
- Sometimes people suffering from amnesia disorder suddenly remember who they are due to a cataclysmic event that triggers the return of their memories. Certain events may include seeing a person that they are familiar with, witnessing events that may have happened to them before, and other similar happenings.
