Bacterial Vagina Infection Information | What is Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginitis Facts:

Below is an overview of what bacterial vaginitis is, how it is transmitted, and what the underlying causative agent is responsible for such disorder.

Disorders of the female reproductive system are relatively common. Some disorders are self limited and can cause only minor inconvenience to some women. However, some of these as well can be life threatening.

The vagina itself is protected against infection by its normally low pH, which is maintained in part by the actions of the dominant bacteria in a healthy vaginal ecosystem. These bacteria suppress the growth of anaerobes and thus maintaining the normal pH of the vagina.
  • Bacterial vaginitis is also referred to as inflammation of the vagina, which occurs when the Candida or Trichomonas species or other bacteria invade the vagina.
  • The normal vaginal discharge, which may occur in slight amounts during ovulation, becomes more profuse when vaginitis occurs.
  • Urethritis may accompany vaginitis due to its proximity of the urethra to the vagina.
There are many types of vaginitis and vaginal infections, and this would differ from what causative agent is responsible for such infection:
  • Candidiasis or inflammation of the vaginal epithelium
  • Trichomonas vaginalis or inflammation of the vaginal epithelium
  • Bartholinitis or infection of greater vestibular gland
  • Atrophic vaginitis or irritation and discharge of alkaline pH of vaginal secretions
