What Are Boils?

Boils are basically red, tender areas on the skin that signals that a localized infection is in that area where it is found. This reddened area then undergoes a few changes and becomes hard then tender afterwards. After some time, this bump then develops a center that is filled with pus. Here are a few more things you should know about boils:
  • Boils are also called skin abscesses.
  • There are few distinct types of boils, and these are categorized according to what caused them and where they are found.
  • One of the more common boils that humans can fall prey to are carbuncles or furuncles. These are usually accompanied by fevers or by chills when they are found on a person’s body.
  • Cystic acne is another boil that you can find on a person. This is usually found on the face of the person infected with it and is the kind of acne that affects deeper parts of the skin.
  • Hidredentitis suppurativa are boils that are found under the armpits of the person who has it. Usually, these are very painful boils that are found on the person’s sweat glands under the arms.
  • Pilonidal cysts are boils that are found in the buttocks area.
