What is a Bruise | Severe Bruising Injury on Skin | Excessive Bruising

What Are Bruises?

You may sometimes find that you have a blackish or bluish mark on a certain part of your skin; and when you touch it, it feels tender to the touch. This is a bruise. A bruise is the result of a blow to a part of your skin that may then start off as a reddish mark. This will then progress to darker shades as the broken blood vessels under the skin force the blood to move to the surface or under the top layers of your skin.
  • Bruises can be more prevalent in older people than in younger people simply because the blood vessels that we all have become fragile with the passing of the years. This means that an older person may experience bruising on skin even when no injury or hard bumping of body parts are experienced.
  • How severe a bruise will be can be blamed on a few factors. One of these factors is medication. Another factor is blood illnesses that are inherent in the person like cirrhosis or hemophilia.
  • When a person is on medication like arthritis drugs or even aspirin, the size of bruises that they get may be affected since these medicines can interfere with clotting abilities of your blood.
