What Are Cold Sores?

When you have cold sores, you are basically suffering from an infection caused by the virus called the herpes simplex virus. When you are infected by this virus, you can expect to have these cold sores break out every now and then all through your life. Here are a few more things you might want to know about this problem:
  • Cold sores or herpes labialis is actually a very common problem that exists in a lot of people and since the virus that causes this problem often stays in a person’s body, recurrence is common as well.
  • These cold sores often erupt around the mouth, on the lips, and even on or around the nose of the infected person.
  • Cold sores appear as blisters, fluid filled sores, and raw bumps that are painful; and these sores can last for a few days or so.
  • When a cold sore does recur, it usually does so in the same area as the previous infection.
  • These cold sores also go by the name fever blisters.
  • These sores are different from another form of mouth sores called canker sores. Canker sores happen inside a person’s mouth, on his tongue, and inside the lips while cold sores erupt outside a person’s mouth and around it.
