What causes the eruption of cold sores? Cold sores are caused primarily by the herpes simplex virus. HSV comes in two types, but the kind that causes herpes labialis or cold sores is type I. Cold sores are contagious and can be caused by a person kissing someone with a cold sore or even when they come in contact with someone who has this sore.

  • After the initial cold sore infection and when a person gets the virus in their system, the recurrence of cold sores is expected. There are triggers that cause cold sores to resurface and these include physical, mental, and emotional factors.
  • Some people who come down with the flu, a fever, or a cold can experience the recurrence of these cold sores.
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight can also trigger the recurrence of cold sores.
  • When a person is suffering from undue stress at work or at home, the recurrence of cold sores can happen due to this stressed out state which can lower a person’s immunity to certain illnesses.
  • Women who get cold sores often do so before or during their menstrual period.
    This is due to the hormonal changes she undergoes during this time.
  • Sometimes the wind can cause excessive dryness of the lip area, which can then cause it to break and erupt in cold sores.

Oral Herpes Causes

Direct skin to skin contact is the primary cause of cold sore outbreak. Person affected with a cold sore on lip can transfer the virus through kissing. It takes around 2 to 12 days before the virus to show any symptom. Other triggering factors are alcohol consumption, prolonged stress, consumption of steroid medications etc. Reoccurrence of cold sore can take place because the virus in a suppressed state can get activated at any point of time. This is due to the fact that virus is present inside the body throughout the life.
