What Is a Cough?

A cough is actually not an ailment but a reflex action that the body enacts to expel certain substances that are lodged in your air passages or in your lungs. Coughs that last for a long time indicate that the irritation or substance that is in your air passages or in your lungs is taking longer to expel. Here are a few more things you might want to know about coughs:
  • There are two distinct types of cough that plague mankind, and these are the chesty coughs and the dry cough.
  • When a person suffers from a dry, he may be trying to expel foreign particles that are in their air passages and lungs but nothing is coming out. If it is a chesty cough, you will usually see the expulsion of phlegm or mucus that comes from your lungs.
  • Chronic coughing is actually just an indication of a more serious problem and may require a complete diagnosis by your doctor to get to the bottom of the problem.
  • Most coughs only last for a few days to a week. If a cough lasts for more than two to three weeks, this usually indicates a deeper problem that should be attended to by a doctor.
  • The kind of phlegm that a person coughs up can also indicate why a person is coughing.
