Cough In One Year Old
Even infants as young as 6 months may suffer from coughs. Coughs are a natural reaction of the body against infection or irritation in the upper respiratory system. However, before seeking for medical assistance, parents may do well to determine the sound of coughs. A cough from a one year old baby can be dry or progressive.
Coughs that last for a week should be examined by physicians. A Cold and a cough can also be an indication of an infection like bronchitis, sinusitis, asthma, and cystic fibrosis. If the baby coughs continuously for 20 or 30 seconds, and experiences difficulty in breathing before another non-stop cough starts, it can be a symptom of whooping cough.
Coughs can be caused by many factors such as the environment. There might be dusts, smoke, plants, or pets nearby.
Cough In One Year Old Treatment
Coughs that sound ordinary can be treated naturally at home.
- For home remedies, cough in a one year old baby can be treated with honey. Honey is best for coughs and colds. It soothes the throat and kills bacteria-causing infection. However, if the child is at one year old, honey should not be given as it can be harmful due to the presence of Clostridium Botulinum spores, a bacterium that causes botulism among infants.
- Since honey is not advisable for children aged one year, ginger can be a good alternative. Ginger tea is a natural anti-inflammatory cure that helps relieve chest congestion. Vinegar is another home remedy. It is also a natural anti-septic agent that can help in fighting bacteria that may cause cough in a one year old baby.
- A mixture of warm water, salt, and a pinch of turmeric is also a good alternative for mouth wash. Have the child gargle the mixture several times each day to cure the infection. This mixture is also effective in keeping the tonsils healthy. It is also best in boosting the overall immune system against invasion of some bacteria.
On the other hand, if symptoms mentioned earlier are observed, it is best to have the child examined by a qualified physician. Also, a persistent ordinary sounding cough must be examined by a doctor after administering treatments.
