Diarrhea Disease Information, Facts | Types of Diarrhea

What Is Diarrhea?

Diarrhea refers to the condition wherein a person may experience frequent watery bowel movements. The loose bowel movement should follow each other at close intervals to qualify the condition as a diarrhea as opposed to ordinary loose bowel movement, which may happen only for a few times and then disappear. Acute diarrhea is one of the leading causes of death in most countries, especially among infants. This is because severe diarrhea results to severe loss of body fluids that can cause dehydration. Moreover, those who suffer from diarrhea lose not only water but also high amounts of electrolytes, salts, and nutrients.

There are various types of diarrhea. This includes the following:
  • Secretory diarrhea means that something is causing an inhibition of absorption. This type of diarrhea is commonly caused by cholera toxin.
  • Osmotic diarrhea results when too much water is drawn into the bowels. This type of diarrhea can be caused by taking laxatives as well as indigestion.
  • Motility diarrhea: Motility diarrhea is the most common type of diarrhea. It happens when food passes very quickly through the intestines, which allow the body too little time to absorb the nutrients and water from the food.
  • Inflammatory diarrhea: This type occurs when there is damage to the intestinal or stomach lining, resulting to loss of protein-rich fluids leading to decreased ability to absorb these lost fluids.
