What Are The Causes Of Duodenitis? Symptoms And Natural Remedies

Duodenitis is inflammation of the duodenum (the upper part of the small intestine). Duodenitis is often characterized by pain in the abdomen, nausea and vomiting, bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, and other GI tract symptoms.

  • One of the commonest causes for duodenitis is H. pylori infection. Despite the fact that this bacterium infects almost half of the global population, it by and large remains asymptomatic.
In some cases, the infection results in gastritis, duodenitis, ulcers and stomach cancer.
  • Duodenitis is known to develop as a side effect of NSAIDs or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. These drugs inflame and irritate the stomach lining and slow down the release of prostaglandins; which help protect the lining of the stomach and intestine by increasing the secretion of mucus and reducing digestive acid secretions. Prolonged usage of NSAIDs and large doses increase the peril significantly.
  • Duodenitis is also linked to GERD or gastro-esophageal reflux disease, viral infections, gall bladder inflammation; gastrointestinal hemorrhage; Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and Crohn’s disease.

Signs And Symptoms Of Duodenitis

Duodenitis causes inflammation of the lining of the stomach lining and this produces a host of clinical features and symptoms.

Commonly seen manifestations of duodenitis are:

  • Pain and discomfort in the abdomen.
  • Abdominal bloating.
  • Loss of appetite.

  • Nausea and vomiting.

In some cases, the condition can also become life-threatening. Life-threatening symptoms are:

  • Severe abdominal pain.
  • Blood in stool.
  • Vomiting of blood.

Natural Remedies For Duodenitis

Adopting certain lifestyle changes and following the diet and food prescriptions given below will help allay the inflammation of the duodenum and also ease the symptoms appreciably.

  • Make sure that you include plenty of high fiber food in your everyday menu. Have lots of oats, whole wheat, kidney beans, lentils, carrots and fresh fruits.
  • Dandelion tea will help alleviate the symptoms considerably by reducing inflammation and swelling of the duodenum; it also helps manage infections of the gut effectively.
  • Have a bowl of yogurt daily. Yogurt is an excellent probiotic; it decreases the chances of GI tract infections by balancing the ‘friendly’ bacteria as well as ‘harmful’ bacteria. Blend together 1 bowl of fresh yogurt with ½ a glass of water and cumin seed powder; have this every day.
  • Mint tea is another very effective home remedy for duodenitis. Mint helps reduce swelling and inflammation successfully; also it is a carminative and prevents a buildup of gas within the GI tract. Have a glass of mint tea after every meal.
  • Alongside, you need to steer clear of spicy and pungent foods; avoid smoking and alcohol consumption; stop all NSAIDs and manage stress level well.
  • Honey is also frequently prescribed to manage the symptoms of duodenitis. Honey soothes the inflamed lining of the small intestine and allays pain and discomfort significantly.
  • Ginger tea is beneficial for duodenitis too. Boil half an inch of the herb-root and boil well in water. Strain and have daily. In case you experience any burning, add a generous dollop of honey and / or blend in a few mint leaves in the decoction.
  • Experts even recommend pomegranate for duodenitis. Have about 1 glass of pomegranate juice to which 1 to 2 spoons of honey has been added every morning. This will help relieve the symptoms rapidly and also bring about cure of the      inflammation.
