What is Ear Infection | Infected Ear Information | What is Otitis

Ear Infection Information:

Ear Infection is commonly known as otitis. The condition is characterized by an inflammation on the areas surrounding as well as of the ear canal itself. Depending on where the infection is, there are various names for the condition.
  • If it is on the outer ear, it is known as otitis externa or “swimmer’s ear.”
  • If the infection is on the inner part of the ear, the condition is known as otitis media or otitis externa. This last kind of otitis is more serious because of the proximity of the infection to the inner and more sensitive parts of the ear. Moreover, treatment of such kind of infection normally requires consulting a specialist on the infection.
Most cases of otitis are caused due to the entry of foreign agents along the ear canal that may cause blocking on the path of the sound waves. In some cases, the condition is a result of dipping in water, wherein liquid may seep into the canal, causing irritation. However, the more serious cases of infection are largely due to microbial infections that cause inflammation as well as the characteristic ache in the ears. Most cases of ear infection are not serious; however, because they affect one’s hearing, they become annoying.
