Edema Information:

• Edema is characterized by swelling of the affected body part due to the accumulation of fluid beneath the skin. The accumulation is not considered normal and may also form in certain body cavities.
• It is important to distinguish edema from ordinary swelling because the former may entail some form of infection or other bodily abnormalities: things that are not normally associated with ordinary swelling.
• Although the swelling part is the one commonly labeled as edema, it is not the only instance wherein a person may acquire the infection.
• Edema can also be acquired through an abnormal operation on the swollen area.
• In other cases, edema is a symptom of having an underlying disease such as congestive heart failure. In this case, treatment of edema requires treating first the heart problem in question.
• Edema can also develop through trauma, especially when a very powerful force struck a body part, causing it to swell.
• Edema is characterized by swelling. However, this is not a fool-proof indicator. For a swelling to be considered as a form of edema, it must be accompanied by redness, and in some cases, an itchy feeling. Another possible indicator of edema is that it causes more severe pain than ordinary swelling would.
