What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a disorder that affects a person’s gastrointestinal tract. This disorder is actually a problem that is of unknown origin or actual cause but is a common enough disorder that affects around 20 percent of the American adult population.
  • This problem called IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is not contagious, cancerous, or hereditary. It does however cause a lot of problems for people who have them due to the disruptive nature of the disease.
  • IBS is easily confused with another ailment called inflammatory bowel disease or IBD. IBD is the disease known as colitis and is the true colitis while IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is called mucous colitis.
  • IBS is more prevalent in women than in men. Women are more susceptible to this ailment than men are and are seen to have this twice as many times as men.
  • While IBS does not cause damage that is lasting or intense, it can still cause disruption to relationships and to a person’s sex life. Around 45 percent of people who live together attest to this and 19 percent of people who live together or are married say that this problem causes some difficulties between them and their partners.
