What is Leg Cramps | Nocturnal Leg or Foot Cramping Pain
Leg or Foot Cramping:
You may have experienced this at one time or another when you suddenly feel an excruciating pain in your leg or in your foot. This is called a leg cramp. Leg cramps are when you suddenly feel the muscles in your leg or in your foot hardening and tightening up in a spasm or muscle contraction.- The most common muscles that often cause a person such pain include the hamstring, the calf, and the quadriceps. One thing these muscles have in common is that they cross two joints. Calf muscles cross the knee and the ankle, while hamstring muscles and quad muscles both cross the hip and the knee.
- While these leg cramps don’t last beyond a minute, some of these tightening of the muscles might actually last longer.
- Leg crampings are more frequent and prevalent in older folks but can also strike younger individuals.
- Some people suffer from what is called nocturnal leg cramps. These often happen when a person is fast asleep and when he sleeps in the fetal position or with his legs bent.
- Leg cramps can also occur in the middle of strenuous exercise like tennis, running, cycling, working out in the gym, and even swimming.
