How to Prevent Leg Cramps | Preventing Foot or Leg Cramping

Leg Cramps Prevention Measures:

Preventing your legs from cramping during exercise, while walking or even when asleep can be done with a few preventive measures. Here are some tips you can try:
  • When exercising, always keep yourself hydrated to avoid the muscle spasms that indicate your lack of hydration. It is also important to warm up your muscles before engaging in strenuous activities or workouts.
  • Stretching your muscles with some of the more common stretching exercises and flexing your feet before running or jogging or even before swimming will help reduce the possibilities of your getting leg cramps in the middle of these activities.
  • Taking a hot shower before you sleep may also help prevent the occurrence of leg cramps at night, specifically those that are recurring. Try to get the hot water to run along the muscles of your legs to relax them before going to bed.
  • If calcium deficiency is one of the causes of your muscle cramps or the pain in your leg at night, drinking a glass of milk before sleeping or taking calcium supplements before going to bed may help you avoid getting these painful spasms when you are sleeping.
  • Try to sleep in a position that does not hinder blood circulation to your legs. This will also prevent the occurrence of nocturnal leg cramps.
