What Is Cirrhosis of Liver?

Liver cirrhosis is a common illness of those who are excessive drinkers. It is a manifestation of the abuse that was heaped on the liver as a result of huge intakes of alcoholic beverages as well as consumption of fatty foods. In a person suffering from cirrhosis of the liver, the tissues of the liver are replaced by fibrous scar tissues, which is typical for those who suffer the disease. In the long run, liver function is lost and may even result to the death of the patient.
  • Although the disease is in itself very fatal, there are still a string of other complications that can likewise lead to fatal results.
  • One such fatal complication is ascites or the retention of fluids in the abdominal cavity. Fluid retention in the abdomen is the most common complication of cirrhosis of the liver.
  • Other life threatening complications are coma as well as bleeding in the aesophagus, resulting from esophageal varices.
  • If the disease is detected early, it may be possible to save the liver and the patient through surgery. However, when the disease is far too advanced, the only means to save the patient is through a liver transplant.
  • Even with a transplant, there is still no guarantee that a person will be saved.

  • What caused my cirrhosis?

I never drank a sip of alcohol in my entire life. I was a vegetarian for about eight years. I never smoked or did any drugs. Although, I do have diabetes and angina. Can't imagine what caused my lever cirrhosis.
