How to Stop and Prevent Losing of Hair after Pregnancy?

Losing Hair after Pregnancy

Generally, women lose around 30 to 100 strands of hair in a day. When a woman is pregnant, the changes in the levels of the progesterone and estrogen hormones of the body prevent hair fall. After childbirth, the body’s metabolism begins to stabilize these changes and bring hair regulation back to normal.

This process causes all the protected hairs that have not fallen off during pregnancy to shed, causing increased or often severe loss of hair. New hair will often start growing after six months from childbirth and the normal growth cycle of the hair can be restored in a year. However, there are some women who do not experience noticeable hair loss after pregnancy.

Tips to do to Stop Hair Loss after Pregnancy

There is no single step or procedure that can stop hair loss after childbirth since it is considered a normal event. What can be done is to prevent further damage and hair fall during the few months where hair falls dramatically.

  • Hair after pregnancy is prone to breakage.

It is vital for patients to handle hair with care when washing and brushing.

  • It is good to use a wide-toothed comb in untangling hair especially when it is wet.

  • Avoid any hair product that contains harsh chemicals like hair sprays. It is best to use herbal and natural products. Diluting shampoo before application can also help.

  • Avoid tying hair too tightly. This enhances breakage and hair fall.

  • Eat a well-balanced meal that is high in protein and iron, since both have been proven to be beneficial for hair growth. If patients are breastfeeding, it would be wise to consult the doctor first on what and what not to include in the diet.

  • Heating appliances like hair irons and hair dryers should be avoided.

  • Massage the scalp with light oil on a regular basis. Good examples of this kind of oil include olive and coconut oil.

  • If hair loss is severe, it is best to cut it short.

  • If possible, avoid hair from being exposed to too much sun.

  • Patients can try using natural remedies such as Aloe Vera, henna, and egg treatment.

Losing Hair after Pregnancy Stress

  • Emotional stress that happens upon arrival of the newborn baby has been proven to interfere with hormonal levels which can lead to more hair fall after pregnancy.

  • Lack of sleep due to the baby’s short sleeping hours can also cause stress which leads to further hair fall.

  • Breastfeeding can deplete nutritional reserves and can lead to an even greater hair loss.
