What Is Premature Greying of Hair?

As people age, it is but natural for them to see their hair turn grey. This is because this is one of the most inevitable and natural signs of aging. However, there are others who experience greying of hair early on in their lives.
  • Happening as early as the twenties, with some experiencing it during their teen years, premature greying of hair is something that causes much concern. This is because it makes anyone look older than their age. Women, most especially, are greatly affected psychologically by this condition.
  • Premature whitening of hair happens because of the slowing of the production of melanin or the pigments of the hair. Although there are many causes to this condition, some of the most prevalent include diseases, improper diet, genetics, or a natural deficiency affecting the hair.
  • The hair is actually an appendage attached to the skin. It is made up of cells similar to those on the skin’s outer layer called the epidermis. Growing from a hair follicle embedded in the epidermis’ recesses, the hair needs sebum to become healthy.
  • This sebum is an oily substance that is secreted by the sebaceous glands of the scalp. It is where the hair gets its nutrition, color and luster. So if the hair does not get proper nourishment from the sebum, it turns grey.
