An Ever-Growing Collection of Simple Home Remedies

PMS

A considerable number of women suffer through Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) each month. Hormonal changes trigger an onslaught of symptoms, including anxiety, depression, headaches and fatigue. Symptoms may vary with each month while some months may be symptom-free.

Many things can be done to treat individual symptoms of PMS, but the best
approach is to maintain a high level of general fitness. This means exercising regularly, eating well, avoiding excess alcohol and caffeine, and getting sufficient sleep.

Exercise is good for relieving stress and improving your general mood. No need to overdo it. A 20 to 30 minute workout 3 times a week will work wonders.

Caffeine is associated with anxiety, so if this is one of your PMS symptoms, stay away from coffee and tea for at least 2 weeks before your period.

Reduce your sodium intake, as sodium is associated with water-retention and bloating, and be sure to include plenty of grains in your diet. Try eating more frequently - 5 or 6 small meals are easier to digest than 3 big meals, and food cravings will be minimized.

Calcium supplements can reduce symptoms of PMS as well as providing other health benefits such as strengthening the bones. Try taking 1000 mg per day.

Magnesium deficiency has also been linked to PMS. 1000 mg as a dietary supplement may help alleviate symptoms.

Vitamin B6 will help if you are bloated. B6 reduces water retention and aids in blood circulation.

Vitamin E can be taken to alleviate breast tenderness.

Herbs for Pre Menstrual Syndrome

Black cohosh is useful in treating PMS symptoms. It reduces menstrual cramps, and is useful in controlling mood swings. It can be taken in pill form as a dietary supplement.

Dandelion root aids against water retention and helps the body expel excess estrogen. It can be taken as a tea by seeping the dried root in hot water, or it can be bought in capsules.

Dong Quai has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries for female reproductive problems. It has properties that aid against menstrual cramps. This herb is available in capsule form. It should not be taken during pregnancy.

Don’t be discouraged if your PMS symptoms don’t disappear all at once. There are bound to be good months and bad months. Maintaining a good level of health and treating individual symptoms is the best approach.
