Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a condition characterized by an increased rate of skin growth. The old skin does not have enough time to be shed, thus causing and accumulation of dead skin cells. Psoriasis is genetic, although not every member of a family will come down with the disease.

It usually first appears in early adulthood, and can re-occur throughout the

patient's life. What triggers it is not known, although it may be aggravated by stress. It is not contagious.

It can appear on any part of the body, and if it is on the hands or feet it can severely affect the patient’s ability to work.

There is no cure for psoriasis. There are many ways to treat the symptoms, however, depending on the location and severity of the scaling and itching.

Moisturizing the affected skin will reduce itching and discomfort. There are many different moisturizers you can try. A low cost, effective moisturizer is Bag Balm. This is usually used on the udders of cows, but it is one of the best moisturizers available.

Other moisturizers that can be applied to the skin are cocoa butter, Crisco, and vegetable oil. Olive oil can be used on the scalp or rubbed into the skin.

A soothing treatment is soaking in lukewarm bathwater mixed with oatmeal powder. It softens the skin and helps remove the scales caused by psoriasis. After the bath apply a moisturizer such as aloe vera or jojoba to the affected areas.

The use of coal tar is effective in relieving itching. It can stain your clothes and has a distinctive odor, so it is best used at night. It should be left on the skin for at least two hours, and if you let it dry before dressing it will minimize the staining of your clothes. Some people’s skin is irritated by tar, so if you notice a burning sensation, wash it off immediately.

Coal tar shampoos are effective for scalp psoriasis. They should be left on the scalp for five to 10 minutes before being rinsed out.

Sunlight Helps Psoriasis

Sunbathing is an effective treatment for psoriasis for many people. Regular exposure to sunlight can help clear up lesions, but don’t overdo it. Sunburn can aggravate psoriasis symptoms.

Sunbathe at least three times a week, and don’t stay in the sun for too long. 20 minutes is a good length of time. If you will be in the sun longer than that be sure to apply a sunscreen.

Be patient. It will take several weeks of sunbathing before you notice an improvement in your psoriasis.

Don't let yourself become discouraged with psoriasis. Keep treating the symptoms with the knowledge that it will clear up. Be persistent and keep a positive attitude.
