Summer
and heat can add up to some problems for your feet.
While not all foot problems can be treated at home, there
are some common sense and preventative measures you can
take to keep your feet healthy this summer.
- Use
common sense - wear the right footwear for the right
activity. For example: wear supportive shoes or rugged
sandals for hiking, not flip-flops.
- Combat
swelling - make sure your feet are comfortable and
properly fitted in shoes before you buy them. It's best
to try on shoes at the end of the day when feet are
already more swollen.
- Wear
shoes made out of leather or breathable materials.
Leather molds to the foot most easily.
- Change
and rotate your shoes - when feet sweat in the
summer, wetness can cause bacteria to break down and
odor to occur. Do not wear the same shoes several
days in a row. Natural deodorant stones or a little
baking soda can help absorb sweat and reduce odor.
-Acrylic
socks can help "wick" moisture away from you
feet when worn with leather or absorbent insoles.
Thorlo (available at www.happyfeet.com) makes some
of the best socks for walking, hiking, running and
other activities.
- Beware
of blisters - treat areas on your feet that are
sensitive to blisters before they happen.
Over-the-counter moleskin or blister pads are helpful.
- And,
don't pop blisters! The blister and the fluid
inside act as natural, sterile dressings for the wound.
- Apply a protective strip (Band-Aid) to protect the wound.
- Baby
your feet - soaking and massaging your feet
in the summertime will also help to keep them happy.
- If
you can afford to splurge, a pedicure by a reputable
specialist is a treat for your feet, too.
- Massage
sandals such as those made by Kenkoh and
(available at happyfeet.com)
will help rejuvenate
your feet and legs, and help you step out in comfort
this summer and beyond.
