Baking Soda For Stomach Ache Remedy: Is It Good For Stomach Pain?

If you ask someone to name few home remedies found in the kitchen shelf, baking soda will invariably be named as one of them. Baking soda is better known by chemists as sodium bicarbonate, bicarbonate of soda etc. It is found naturally in mineral deposits, sediments of lake and oceans.

Sodium bicarbonate is also produced in humans for healthy maintenance of blood pH, and if needed to correct it.

It also acts as a neutralizing agent for the acids secreted in stomach. It plays an important role in transporting carbon dioxide from various tissues to lungs.

Baking soda is used since centuries for relieving stomach ache. It is considered to be old grandmother’s remedy. Even today, in this complex world of modern medicine, baking soda is never forgotten as a home remedy to treat stomach ache caused due to indigestion and heartburn. Indigestion and heartburn are two common stomach complaints of modern age. The cause behind it is excessive production of stomach acids. Due to its alkaline nature, baking soda helps to neutralize the acids and thus alleviating pain and discomfort.

The alkaline nature of this white crystalline salt compound is due to its high pH value.

Baking soda has pH value of 8.4. Thus it is considered as a natural antacid. Many antacids sold in market contain sodium bicarbonate a one of its ingredient.

Baking Soda Remedies For Stomach Ache

Generally baking soda is useful when you have stomach ache after eating too much of food. The overloaded stomach will displace acid into the esophagus, giving rise to reflux and heartburn. As an antacid it will help in neutralizing the acid and thus relieve stomach pain. Take 1 teaspoon of baking soda powder and mix it in 3 ounce of warm water. Mix it well before drinking the water. After taking it, you may experience bloating and a burp. You will find relief in your stomachache.

Baking soda should not be taken more than 1 or 2 teaspoon at a time because it will slow down the digestive process because of its alkaline nature.

If you want to have pleasant taste, mix one teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. Add few drops of lemon juice and a pinch of sugar.

Is Baking Soda Good For Stomach Pain?

Stomach ache can be due to several reasons and many of them may be serious. If your stomach pain is over-whelming and consistent, if you have other associated symptoms, the thumb rule is to consult a physician. Baking soda is generally useful when the stomach discomfort is mild and the condition is benign, such as stomach pain arising after overeating, or after eating too much spicy and oily food.

One thing that needs to be mentioned here is baking soda does not cure the disease of stomach. It just gives symptomatic relief for a brief period. As said earlier baking soda is a home remedy that is handy, but before taking for stomach pain you should always talk to your doctor.

Since baking soda contains sodium salt, you should avoid taking it as an antacid is you are suffering from hypertension or if you have been suggested to eat salt restricted diet. In such cases, the physician’s prescription will be more appropriate for the ailing stomach issue.
