Receding Chin Symptoms: What Causes It And How To Correct It?

The chin is said to be receded when it is smaller and retruded in size. Many people dislike having a short chin as it changes the facial contour and attractiveness. They often relate receded chin to be the cause of dull image and their inelegant facial appearance. People with receding chin may also develop double chin.

All the above features of narrow and small chin may have great influence on the person’s facial aesthetic appeal. Besides the physical and cosmetic problem, it may also be a factor for mental distress. Having short chin may also affect a person’s confidence and self esteem.

Dental problems like crowding and other abnormal teeth positions are often associated with smaller chin. People experiencing this problem often find ways to make their chin look sharp and prominent.

What Are The Causes Of Receding Chin?

There are several causes which may be linked to receding chin.

  • Congenital: Receded chin can be since birth, it means that growth of chin and lower jaw gets affected even when the fetus is still in the womb.
It is one of the commonest causes of retrograde development of chin. In a condition called micrognathia, the lower jaw bone is smaller than the upper jaw. It makes the chin appear smaller in size as the lower jaw itself has retarded growth. This congenital condition can be independent or may be one of the symptoms of other defects such as trisomy 13, Marfan’s syndrome etc. A traumatic injury to lower jaw bone, especially during the childhood can constrain the jaw bone growth and subsequently the chin.
  • Active recession of chin: It is rare to occur after adolescence. Certain factors may be associated for development of receding chin later in life. In rare cases, arthritis of lower jaw bone or temporomandibular joint can cause recession of chin. The problem is mostly confined to elderly individuals. It may also occur in a patient who has removed a part of lower jaw bone due to mandible cancer. Certain types of dental problems can be a cause for active recession of chin.

Symptoms Of Receding Chin

Receding chin is often self diagnosed because of its appearance. The chin is short and small and because of this the face appears flat.

In cases where the lower jaw is excessively smaller in comparison to upper jaw, the upper lips appear protruded. Person may also find difficulty in eating as the top teeth are slightly ahead of the bottom teeth in many cases of receding chin.

Patient may complain of pain in temporomandibular joint while laughing and eating if there is associated arthritis. The wrinkles which appear around the mouth are more prominent and darkened as the chin is small.

As the chin is smaller and ill defined the contour of chin and neck remains unclear. This is often associated with early development of double chin in such people.

How To Correct A Receding Chin?

In majority of people retruded chin does not pose any major health issue except from its aesthetic importance. However, if the condition is due to any underlying disease, medications to treat the cause may effectively correct or reduce the advancement of recession of chin. Sometimes it is possible to reverse the problem.

However, if the receding chin is since birth or if it has occurred due to cancer of mandible the only option left is surgical intervention. There are several corrective surgeries which can change the contour of chin. Bilateral sagital split osteotomy is one such procedure frequently adopted by surgeons. The other option is madibular distraction.

In bilateral sagital split osteotomy, a split is made in lower jaw and the jaw bone is placed forward. Thus the chin appears more prominent.

In mandibular distraction the lower jaw bone is stimulated through external force. An intra oral devise is placed for stimulating the growth of bone. This procedure has become popular in making the chin more prominent.
