Causes of Premature White Hair in Children and Its Treatment

White Hair in Children

Hair is essential for humans because it serves as a sensory function, which in one way or another extends the sense of touch in some parts of the body such as the ears and nose. Hair roots are known as hair follicles. The hair follicles contain melanin which is the one that gives color to the hair.

As a person becomes older, the hair gradually loses its color and becomes white in the long run. That is why white hair is common in people who are in their older age. Melanocytes are the pigments that give color to hair as well as skin. They live in hair follicles. In normal circumstances as time passes or a person becomes old, the pigments begin to wane. And this causes grey hair. However, different people have different melanocyte clock. In some individual it may wane early in life while in some the pigments may remain till late. Heredity is one of the reasons for grey hair in children. If that is the reason there is no way out. However, certain conditions can also cause premature grey hair such as vitamin deficiency, anemia, and thyroid disorder. All these problems can be corrected with proper medications. Once the disease is cured chances of hair becoming grey reduces substantially.

The most obvious reason for premature grey hair is hereditary. The other causes may be thyroid hormone imbalance, anemia, etc. If it is hereditary treatment may not be useful. However, give the child a balanced diet composed of vitamins and minerals. Fruits and vegetables contain plenty of vitamins and minerals. The antioxidants present in them are also beneficial. Boil curry leaves, dried Indian gooseberry in coconut oil. Cool and store this oil in a bottle and use it regularly as head massage oil.

One grey hair should not be a cause of worry. However, you should observe it for few months if there appears more grey hair. If so, may consult your pediatrician. Meanwhile give him nutritious diet containing all essential vitamins and minerals. He should take milk regularly. Also include vegetables and fruits in his diet. Massage his head gently with coconut oil. Coconut oil is known to prevent graying.

In majority of cases the age of onset of grey hair is heredity. Other reasons such as thyroid problem may also lead to grey hair. Check your thyroid hormone level. Eat diet consisting of all essential nutrients. Apply coconut oil mixed with Indian gooseberry powder at least two times in a week. Eat carrots and green vegetables as much as possible. Both contain vitamin A which is essential for healthy hair growth.

Thyroid dysfunction is also blamed to be responsible for graying of hair. If the cause is due to hereditary, there is little which can be done. However, there are ways to reduce the intensity. He should include vegetables and fruits in his diet. Also increase proteins containing foods. Massage hair with coconut oil and Indian gooseberry mixed in the oil. Reduce stress, and he should do regular exercise.
