What Causes Cloudy Vision & How to Treat Further Loss with Prevention

When a person’s visual acuity is reduced or dimming of vision is perceived, it can be due to cloudy vision. A person can experience lack of eyesight clarity when suffering from cloudy vision. It can also dull the color perception of and individual, which comes with halos or glaring lights.

This can result from simple tearing or discharge from the eyes or from a more serious condition like trauma.

Though this is also termed as blurring of vision, these two conditions slightly differ. Blurred vision is usually due to error of refraction which can be remedied through corrective glasses or contact lenses. Cloudy vision, on the other hand, occurs due to cataract or when the transparency of the eye lenses is gradually lost.

What Causes Cloudy Vision

There are a variety of conditions that can cause cloudy vision. The presence of tiny element can be a cause of cloudy vision. However, there are more serious conditions resulting to this, which can threaten one’s vision.

The following are the usual causes of cloudy vision:

  • Presbyopia – This condition is an age-related eye disorder wherein a person becomes farsighted and unable to focus and perceive objects within near distances.
  • People who need corrective glasses and lenses, or require change of these can also develop cloudy vision.
  • Myopia – This is an eye problem also known as nearsightedness. A person with myopia experiences cloudy vision as he would be unable to focus and perceive objects at far distances.
  • Migraines
  • Eye injuries
  • Tiny foreign object that has been caught in the eye.
  • Eye dryness
  • Diabetes –This is a chronic disease which also causes vision problems, especially during its late stages. A person with diabetes can develop diabetic retinopathy.
  • Cataracts – It is the most common cause of cloudy vision as it leads to the loss of the lens’ transparency on one or both eyes.
  • Age-related macular degeneration.

How to Treat Cloudy Vision

The treatment for cloudy vision is focused on the prevention of further vision loss. The following are treatment modes to help control the symptoms and avoid further damage.

  • Taking high doses of Vitamin E, C and A, as prescribed, to delay the progression of macular degeneration.
  • Prescription of medications that would delay the development of the root cause of cloudy vision, particularly age-related macular degeneration.
  • Side effects of certain drugs cause cloudy vision. Thus, report this immediately to the attending doctor and discuss about this issue, for possible replacement or discontinuation.
  • Since alcohol and smoking can contribute to the occurrence of cloudy vision. It helps to avoid these factors.
