Causes of Droopy Eyelids and Home Remedies for Its Treatment

Droopy eyelids will make us look tired and stressed out. They can also make us look older than our age. Droopy eyelids can be caused by many factors including stress, lifestyle, and medical conditions.

Eyelids can droop above and below the eyes. Symptoms of droopy eyelids include:

  • Eyelids drooping down low in front of the eye or eyes.

  • The lids do not rise or fall sharply as you gaze up and down

Droopy eyes are self-evident. The important part of diagnosis is to determine its cause. Sagging of eyelids in the lower part may cause eye bags. Some of the causes are:

  • Lack of sleep

  • Thyroid dysfunction

  • Fatigue

  • Allergies

  • Fluid retention

  • Smoking

  • Exposure to toxic substances

  • Too much exercise

  • Stress

  • Lack of fluid intake

Droopy Eyelid Causes

There are many causes of droopy eyelids including medical condition including congenital. Some of the known causes are:

  • Congenital malfunction. This include:

    • Blepharophimosis

    • Myasthenia gravis

  • It can also be due to:

    • Misshapen eyelid

    • Weak levator muscle

    • Paralysis of some nerves

    • Injuries such as fracture of the skull bone between eye socket and nose

    • Oxidative stress. This is a major cause of sagging of skin including in the eyelids.

      It is often the result of eating unhealthy foods like processed foods, which increase free radicals. The most common consequences of free radicals are wrinkles, bulky eye bags, and dull and sagging skin.

    • Fatigue

Droopy Eyelid Treatment

If the droopy eyelid is due to medical condition, the treatment is medical such as:

  • surgery

  • application of cream products

  • botox injection

  • blepharoplasty

Home Remedies Include

  • Proper and moderate exercise including eye exercise, which is done by placing a finger under the eyebrow and lift it slowly and hold it on that position for ten seconds before bringing the eyebrow back to its normal position.

  • Eating balanced and healthy foods preferably vegetarian

  • Drinking lots of liquid especially water and fresh juice.

  • Applying thin slices of potatoes onto the eyes

  • Freeze a simple spoon in the freezer for a few minutes, and apply it onto the eyelids like a cold compress does. It soothes the tired muscles.

  • Avoid over indulgence in alcohol

  • Get plenty of sleep

  • Avoid fatigue

  • Applying of chamomile tea bags or thin slices of cucumber on the eyes.
