According to the Mayo Clinic, males between the age group of 14-25 years often experience the problem of ingrown hair on the chin. It is more frequently observed in males of African origin, especially due to coarse and curly nature of their hair. There are several home remedies that can help prevent the problem and some dermatological procedures which might be beneficial, especially in individuals with severe ingrown hair problems.
Natural Remedy for Ingrown Hair on Chin
Here are a few natural remedies that are relatively beneficial in the management of ingrown hair on the chin:
- Local application of a paste of turmeric and honey is considered useful. Honey helps in soothing the skin, while turmeric is considered to be a natural anti-microbial. This paste can be applied at the site of the ingrown hair on the chin to prevent infection and also to hasten the healing process.
- Gentle exfoliation of the skin can be beneficial in the removal of debris and dead skin, which might clog the hair follicles and prevent the hair from coming out. Local application of freshly squeezed lemon juice is considered a very good exfoliating agent. Using skin scrubs comprising of a mixture of honey, oatmeal and walnut is also considered helpful.
- Local application of Aloe Vera Gel is also beneficial in soothing the skin.
- Washing the face with water and gentle soap prior to shaving is recommended. This helps soften the skin and hair around the beard, which reduces the possibility of the hair poking the skin.
How to Remove Ingrown Hair on the Chin
Here are some simple tips that help remove the ingrown hair on the skin:
- Use tweezers to remove ingrown hair. Ensure that the tweezers are sterilized before use. Alternatively, one could dip the tips of the tweezers in hydrogen peroxide or iodine. This technique can be used only when you can see the ingrown hair.
- Use a sterile needle to remove the embedded ingrown hair. This technique can be used especially for embedded hair, which is not visible to the eye. Dip the tip of a sterilized needle in hydrogen peroxide or betadine and then gently try to pull out the embedded hair.
- In case the ingrown hair is not clearly visible, it is advisable to apply hot compress on the area for a few days about three to four times a day. This will soften the skin, enlarge the size of the pores and help in pushing out the ingrown and embedded hair
Most cases of ingrown hair on the chin are manageable using home remedies or home based treatment. However, in some cases laser hair removal may be required. Consult your dermatologist for stubborn ingrown hair that doesn’t respond to home based treatment. Laser treatment on the chin will remove the hair follicle and prevent the hair from growing from it.
