Health Benefits of Consuming Kombucha Tea & Its Possible Side Effects

Kombucha has been a fairly popular folk remedy. It was first discovered in East Asia, and was made popular in Germany just before the turn of the 19th century. Since then, Kombucha Tea has been making waves as a cure for aging and HIV. Its use has been linked with the promotion of good health, prevention of disease, and in alleviating the symptoms of certain types of cancers.

It has been said to contain antioxidants which can largely prevent the development of cancer. It is made of fermented black tea combined with cultures of bacteria and yeasts. After fermentation, a sac forms which resembles the color and shape of a mushroom. This is why the source is also known as the Kombucha mushroom.

There has been much controversy regarding the use of Kombucha tea as an alternative medicine. The brewing and fermentation process is usually high in lactate, acetic acid, ethyl acetate, and alcohol.

Kombucha Tea Side Effects

Although the benefits seem abundant, there have been no proven therapeutic claims. However, side effects have surfaced over the years.

  • Cases gone wrong have also been attributed to wrong use of storage vessels. Lead crystal, ceramic, and other painted containers are not compatible with the components of the tea. The high acidity of Kombucha can absorb harmful chemicals from such containers.
