  • It is one of the effective treatments for diarrhea, dyspepsia, and gastroenteritis.
  • It was first given to kids to help stomachs recover from infections and ailments characterized by symptoms such as stomach cramps, vomiting and nausea.

How to Administer the BRAT Diet

  • Drink clear liquids such as water, ginger ale, broth. Kids should consumer at least 10 glasses of water a day.
  • When the child begins to tolerate liquid intake, start adding BRAT foods in his diet.
  • First introduce bananas which helps relieve constipation.
  • Increase rice consumption to improve rehydration and reduce stool volume.
  • Applesauce is good as it is easily digested.
  • Apply small amount of jelly on the toast.
  • Crackers, cooked cereals, oatmeal, pasta, and fresh fruit juice are also oftentimes included in the BRAT diet.
  • Avoid uncooked vegetables, dairy products like milk and cheese, fatty and oily foods for one week.
  • Kids should also avoid soft drinks, prune juice, sweetened cereals, avocado dips, and other unhealthy foods when taking BRAT diet.
