Slip Disc Treatment: Symptoms and Home Remedies for Slipped Disc

What is Slip Disc?

Slip Disc is layman’s term for spinal disc herniation. It is a medical condition involving the spine. The “slip disc” happens when the fibrous outer ring is torn, allowing the soft inner portion of the spine to bulge out. The intensity of pain depends on the degree of “slipping” and the pain threshold of the patient.

Slip Disc Symptoms

It is important to know the symptoms of slip disc to ensure that it is treated immediately so as to prevent further injuries. The following are some of the most common symptoms of spinal disc herniation:

  • Pain that radiating in the back, neck, and the lower part of the body;
  • Numbness – close to, immediately above, or below the affected area;
  • Paralysis of a portion of the body, especially the lower part;
  • Tingling or itchy feeling in the lower back or around the genitals;
  • Unexplained, regular partial or complete unconsciousness;
  • Pain when sneezing, walking, or other activities that involve sudden movement;
  • Inflammation of the affected area; or
  • No symptom at all.

Slip Disc Treatment

Depending on the symptoms presented or the part affected or the intensity of the ailment, slip disc may be treated using the following:

  • Using medications such as analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, painkillers, and steroid injections;
  • Bed rest;
  • Increased amount of gentle activity but avoiding certain activities such as lifting, reaching, or sitting for prolonged periods of time;
  • Physical therapy;
  • Endoscopic laser discectomy;
  • Prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement;
  • Open discectomy;
  • Use of back brace; or
  • Use of a weight belt.

Slip Disc Home Remedies

Not all cases require intense treatment. Some can be easily treated at home, especially those mild cases discovered early on. Some home remedies include:

  • Medication for pain and inflammation;
  • Alternate application of cold and hot packs on the affected area;
  • Back strengthening exercises (as the slipped disc improves); or
  • Bed rest for 2-3 days.
