Shrimp is a very popular dish, but it is also one of the most common causes of food poisoning. Some of the common causes of food poisoning from this seafood include:

  • Stale Shrimp – This can include shrimp that are prepared even when past their expiry date

  • Tinned or Packed Shrimp With No Expiry Date

  • Sick Shrimps That Were Harvested Despite Illness – This can include shrimp with bacterial infections

  • Chemicals in the Shrimp’s Body – Most shrimp farms chemically treat their ponds to prevent infections.

    These use very strong chemicals and it can affect humans.

Symptoms of Food Poisoning From Shrimp

The symptoms of food poisoning can be observed a few hours after consumption or up to a few days. The severity of the symptoms experienced will vary from one person to another and will be affected by how resistant an individual is.

The common symptoms of this type of food poisoning include:

  • Stomachache

  • Dizziness

  • Headache

  • Weakness

  • Numbness in Arms in Legs

  • Melena – Blood in Stool

  • Difficulty Swallowing

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Fever

  • Sluggishness

Treatment for Shrimp Food Poisoning

When shrimp food poisoning is suspected, it is important to seek immediate medical care. Some of the common treatments for the condition include:

  • Fluid Therapy – Patients needs to be hydrated, especially if they are vomiting or have severe diarrhea.

    This treatment involves oral water therapy as well as Intravenous therapy for severe cases or when hospitalization is necessary.

  • Anti-emetic and Anti-Diarrheal Medication

  • Pain Medication – Given to relieve stomach pain

BRAT Diet – A bland food diet that can help reintroduce the stomach to solid foods. This diet is composed of Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. This diet may be prescribed for a couple of days until the symptoms of poisoning go away.

Prevention is necessary so people have to make sure that they are eating good quality shrimp and shrimp that has been handled and cooked properly.
