- Ensure that your child snacks on fresh fruit. These are packed with antioxidants, fiber and also supply loads of simple sugar which generates energy. Give them one serving of bananas, apples, cherries, berries, peaches, or grapes, every day.

- Drastically cut down on eating out. Parents must keep an eye on children who eat out, find out sources of surplus calories and give them dietary guidelines. Teach them to opt for fresh salads, whole grain sandwiches, brown rice, rather that pizzas, burgers, confectionery items, etc.
