Natural Treatment and Remedies for Stool Softener in Children

Constipation is very painful, especially in very young children and babies. As much as possible, it is good to incorporate fiber in the diet to prevent constipation. Still, if the ailment could not be avoided, there are at least plenty of stool softeners that can be given to the child to ease the pain and to help pass the stool quickly.

Natural Treatment for Stool Softener in Children

  • There are many factors that could contribute to constipation in children. Some of these are poor eating habits, too much cow’s milk, less fiber in the diet, and not drinking enough fluids.
  • If the child is constipated, he/she might have trouble passing stool daily. If the child does not defecate daily, ask him/her if he/she is straining to pass the stool. If yes, then stool softeners should be given.
  • Parents do not have to spend a lot of money for synthetic stool softeners. If they can make their children eat more fiber and grains, then the stool will become softer. Also, the child should be made to drink plenty of liquids.
  • Prune juice and apple juice might also be useful.

Stool Softener for Toddlers

  • Because it is harder for parents to make toddlers eat more fiber, they could be creative in introducing these food items to the child’s diet. If this still proves very difficult, over-the-counter stool softeners may have to be administered.
  • However, before giving the child the stool softener, it is important to determine if the child is really constipated. Not having daily bowel movements but still having soft stools is not sign of constipation.

Stool Softener for Babies

  • Breastfed babies may defecate only once a week. This is natural and is not constipation as long as the stool is soft.
  • If the baby is constipated, it is best to consult a doctor. He/she will provide the right stool softener for the baby.
