Soy Protein Isolate Dangers and Its Side Effects

Protein is an important natural compound needed by the body, and both children and adults need this in order to build good muscles and repair bad tissues. Protein is such a popular natural compound in fact, that athletes and health buffs now include protein powders as part of their daily diet.

Protein may be sourced from whey, egg and soy. Of these three, the most interesting source is soy, as it provides two forms of soy protein for consumption: soy protein concentrate and soy protein isolate. Of these two, people must be wary of the risks in ingesting soy protein isolate.

Soy Protein Isolate Dangers

The American Dietetic Association warns the public that soy protein isolate contains certain anti-nutrients that may cause the body to experience delay in digesting food and in effect, a delay in absorbing nutrients.

Further, the following effects may result from ingesting soy protein isolate:

  • Sustaining hormonal imbalances. Soy contains phytoestrogens, which replicate the effects of estrogen in the human body. This may in turn cause hormonal imbalance on people taking soy protein isolate.
  • Suffering from the enlargement of the thyroid gland.
  • Experiencing rapid weight gain or weight loss due to a flawed thyroid gland.
  • Ingesting toxins and aluminum contamination. The processing method of soy protein isolate may cause this effect.
  • Suffering from infertility and other reproductive issues.

Soy Protein Side Effects

The negative side effects of taking soy protein are most apparent in people who have an allergic reaction to soy. However, there are reportedly a string of negative side effects for people who do not have soy allergy. The following side effects may occur:

  • Development of thyroid diseases.
  • Increased risk for developing cancer illnesses.
  • Reduction of testosterone levels in men.
  • Memory Loss.
