Intestinal Inflammation Causes

  • Bacterial Causes. These are among the most common causes of intestinal inflammation. Staphylococcus and Escherichia Coli or E. coli are some of the most common bacteria that bring about severe symptoms and serious complications. Other kinds of bacteria that cause diseases related to intestinal inflammation include Salmonella, Shigella, Clostridium difficile and Campylobacter.
    The Clostridium difficile bacterium does not come from contaminated food but rather from antibiotics that are used.
  • Viral Causes. This is also another common cause especially for those that have inflamed intestines due to gastroenteritis. Some of the common kinds of virus that are involved include the Norovirus and the Rotavirus. Less common but equally dangerous ones include Adenovirus, Parvovirus, and the Astrovirus.
  • Parasites and Protozoans. Giardia and Cryptosporidium are some of the most common parasites that inflame the intestines.
  • Chemical Toxins. These toxins are commonly found in seafood, antibiotics and other medications, and heavy metals. Antibiotics here can actually disturb the balance of the bacteria inside the body which would allow overgrowth and can lead to inflamed intestines.
  • Heredity. There are diseases that cause the intestines to inflame and can be acquired through genetic predisposition. Colitis and the IBD or Inflammatory Bowel Disease are some of the examples.
  • Weak immune system. There are patients that have immune systems which fight off infections that is not present which would often cause the intestines to get irritated.
  • Lack or too much blood which can cause inflammation of the blood vessels. When this happens in the intestinal tract, it can cause intestinal inflammation.
  • Stress.

Intestinal Inflammation Diet

  • For those patients that want to avoid intestinal inflammation, a high fiber diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids is required. Foods that can be eaten here are mostly vegetables and fish. Good examples of fish that help prevent inflammation not only in the intestines but also in other parts of the body include salmon and halibut. Almost all kinds of vegetables are good in preventing intestinal inflammation.
  • Patients that have intestinal inflammation problems should avoid foods that are rich in sugar, certain fatty acids, simple carbohydrates, and oils. Foods that are rich with these include junk foods specifically donuts, pastries, and sodas.
  • Orange Juice. This can neutralize the effects of high-carbohydrate and high fat meals by preventing the increase of endotoxins.
  • Supplements. There are numerous nutrients that can be found in herbs that can help reduce the inflammation. Some of these are boswellic acids found in Boswellia and Curcumin from turmeric extracts.
