Chills without Fever
Chills occur when the body is attempting to burn energy just to increase the body’s temperature. Chills are felt by a person fighting against infection; this is followed by a high temperature or fever and sweating. Episodes of chills can be felt from a range of 15 minutes to a few hours, or until the fever is obviously felt.
Causes of Chills without Fever
Chills or “shivering” maybe accompanied by being pale and feeling cold. Below are some of the causes of chills with the absence of fever:
- Change in climatic condition, such as exposure to a cold environment. The person shivers because it’s the body’s natural response to the cold environment. It means that the body is no longer able to tolerate exposure to low temperatures.
- Prescription Drugs. Side effects of drugs can manifest as episodes of constant chills even without fever, especially when the dosage for a certain patient has not been calculated adequately.
- Thyroid Problems. The function of Thyroid gland is to produce hormones that are responsible for the normal metabolic rate of the body. When the thyroid gland malfunctions, such as not producing enough hormones for the body, chills can be felt by the person, and is usually accompanied by extreme tiredness.
- Insect bites, such as spiders may cause chills even without fever. Spiders rich in venom such as the black widow or the brown recluse can bring allergic reactions all over the body of the victim.
- Nutritional Deficiencies, such as lack of Vitamin B and B12 makes the individual prone to chills even without fever. Deficiency in the said vitamins increases cold sensitivity.
- Other considered factors are “goose bumps”, which are indications of alteration in the temperature, but it is not necessarily associated with fevers.
- Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar level.
- Gallstones problem. The patient feels chills accompanied by pain.
Treatment for Chills without Fever
Although the problem is not accompanied by fever, chills should not be ignored entirely. There are some home remedies which can be prepared for a person with episodes of chills. These include:
- Chills without fever are mostly common during winter seasons; a person should be dressed appropriately to prevent chills.
- Drink plenty of fluids and have some rest. Herbal concoctions such as ginger tea may help warm the body. Asians recommend ginseng and sake to help maintain the body’s temperature.
- Foods rich in vitamins b and b12 such as fish and eggs help maintain the thermoregulatory mechanism of the body.
