Fatigue After Eating: What Are Its Causes And How To Prevent It?

It is common to feel tired and sleepy after consuming a heavy meal. This is because the circulatory system diverts most of the blood supply to the gastrointestinal system to support the process of digestion of food, which in turn reduces supply of blood to other parts of the body, making you feel tired and sleepy.

However feeling fatigued after a meal can be associated with pathological condition or other causes that may require medical attention. What Causes Fatigue After Eating?

After consuming a meal high in refined carbohydrates, the blood sugar level spikes suddenly and then drops rapidly. As the blood sugar level drops significantly, a patient may suffer from symptoms of hypoglycemia which include fatigue, dizziness and poor focus. This condition may have a more severe manifestation in individuals suffering from Type II Diabetes.
  • Insulin Resistance: This condition is more frequently observed in individuals with Type I diabetes. Insulin is a hormone which is aids body cells in uptake of sugar from the blood. Insulin resistance causes the body cells to become insensitive to insulin and insulin no longer influences the uptake of sugar by the body cells. Inadequate uptake of sugar results in lower energy levels even after a meal.

While treatment of the underlying condition is critical in the management of fatigue after eating, there are some simple tips that may be beneficial,

  • A balanced diet plays a vital role in the prevention of fatigue. A healthy well balanced diet supplies all the essential nutrients to the body, which are critical for energy and development of the body cells.
  • Avoid refined carbohydrates and processed foods. Instead opt for fresh fruits and vegetables. These foods are low in glycemic index, which means that they release sugar gradually into the blood stream, preventing sudden spikes and drops in sugar levels, which can lead to fatigue after eating.
  • Homeopathic drug namely Nux Vomica and Lycopodium promotes digestion and are considered effective in the treatment of fatigue and digestive disorders.
