Grierson Gopalan Syndrome

Grierson-Gopalan syndrome or burning feet syndrome is a medical condition that is characterized by severe aching and burning of the feet, vasomotor changes that cause excessive sweating of the feet, and hyperesthesia. This condition can also affect the eyes and leads to amblyopia and scotoma.

The syndrome occurs more in women than in men and usually shows up between the ages of twenty and forty.

The burning sensations are commonly felt on the soles of the feet but may sometimes extend up to the lower legs along with tingling sensations. These symptoms usually manifest more or gets worse at night than in the morning.

Grierson Gopalan Syndrome Causes

  • Fungal infection in the feet area or athlete’s foot.
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. This condition happens when the tibial nerve or its branches that run along the foot and the legs are compressed by the flexor retinaculum of the medial ankle.
  • Low levels of vitamin B3 or niacin.
  • Diabetes. Uncontrolled levels of blood sugar in the body can cause severe damage to nerves that are located in the feet.
  • Patients that have liver failure, damaged kidneys, hypothyroidism, and rheumatoid arthritis along with other autoimmune disorders have greater chances in developing the syndrome.
  • Chemotherapy
  • Regular and excessive intake of alcoholic beverages.
  • Wearing of shoes for long periods of time. This inhibits adequate air to reach the feet.
  • Wearing ill-fitted shoes which can lead to inflammation of the nerves in the feet.
  • Allergic reaction on the feet area caused by exposure to certain chemicals, dyes, or materials that are used in making socks and shoes.
  • Obesity. This puts too much pressure on the feet.

Grierson Gopalan Syndrome Treatment and Remedies

  • Wear comfortable and open shoes that come with arch supports.
  • Wear cotton socks.
  • Soak feet in cold water that is mixed with apple cider vinegar. This can help control burning sensations.
  • Take vitamin B supplements or include in the regular diet foods that are rich with this vitamin like whole grains, fresh green leafy vegetables, yogurt, milk, and egg yolk.
  • There are over the counter creams that can be rubbed on the affected area. These often give instant relief. There are also anti-fungal creams that can stop fungal infections like athlete’s foot.
  • Patients that have diabetes are advised to manage blood sugar levels. This can be done with the administration of prescribed medications and following a proper diet.
  • To reduce inflammation of the nerves, patients should have adequate amounts of rest.
  • Foot massages and foot spa treatments.
  • Rest affected foot in an elevated position.
  • Pain medications can be used to manage pain and inflammation.
