Symptoms of Inactive Thyroid and Its Treatment Procedures

Suboptimal levels of thyroid hormone in the body characterize an inactive thyroid. Since thyroid hormones are responsible for a myriad of functions, including growth and metabolism, thyroid deficiency definitely affects all regulations. More importantly, the depression of thyroid hormone leads to a general slowing of all mental and physical processes. Hypothyroidism may be a preexisting condition or secondary to other diseases.

The most common cause is due to autoimmune thyroiditis or Hashimoto’s disease, wherein the body’s own immune system attacks and destroys normal cells, in this case, the cells comprising the thyroid gland. Other causes include:

  • History of hyperthyroidism
  • Radiation therapy of the head and neck.
  • Medications
  • Iodine deficiency or excess.

Inactive Thyroid Symptoms

Inactive thyroid symptoms can range from mild forms to mxyedema, which is an advanced form of thyroid hormone depletion. An inactive thyroid since birth is a condition known as cretinism. Whatever the cause may be, the symptoms of hypothyroidism are almost always general. The sign and symptoms range from nonspecific complaints to life-threatening manifestations. These include:

  • Extreme fatigue. The patient reports failure to complete or participate from usual activities.
  • Hair loss, brittle nails, and dry skin.
The skin loses its natural integrity due to the accumulated polysaccharides in the fatty layers. The hair thins and the face appears expressionless.
  • Hoarseness of the voice.
  • Menstrual disturbances. These include Menorrhagia and amenorrhea, which are characterized by either scanty or absent menstruation. Decreased libido also accompanies these disturbances.
  • Sudden weight gain. The metabolic activity of the cells in the body decreases.
  • Subnormal temperature and pulse rate. The patient complains of cold even in a hot and humid environment. The change in metabolic activity decreases the oxidation of nutrients, and produces less body heat.
  • Irritability. Initially, the patient becomes agitated. As the condition progresses, emotion becomes subdued and lead to personality changes.

Treatment Method for Inactive Thyroid

  • Selenium. Aside from a deficiency in iodine, people diagnosed with hypothyroidism were found to have low stores of selenium in the body. This substance is essential for the conversion of thyroid hormones.
  • Tyrosine. This amino acid is necessary in the formation of thyroid hormones.
  • Bladderwack. This seaweed has long been indicated for hypothyroidism and weight loss. People with goiter consume Bladderwack as it can stimulate metabolism.
