What are the Causes of Stinky Sweat and How to Stop It?

Body Odor is something that many people have to deal with. It starts becoming observable in adolescents around the ages of 14 and 16. There are some factors that can predispose a person to having Body Odor. The condition is medically known as Bromhidrosis.

Controlling body odor can be easy enough but for some it may take some trial and error to determine a treatment method that works for them.

Some factors that can predispose a person to getting body odor include:

  • Age. This is common in kids aged 14 to 16 as they have not yet learned to control it.
  • Diet. People who tend to eat a lot of spicy foods may be predisposed to develop the condition.
  • Hyperhidrosis. Those who sweat too much are more prone to develop the problem.
  • Weight. Obese individuals have more surface area of skin and more skin folds as well.
  • Diabetics

Stinky Sweat Causes

It is important to keep in mind that sweat itself is not stinky, it is virtually odorless to humans.

Most people will be familiar with the idea that bacteria on the skin are responsible for body odor.

This is true to some extent in that the bacteria are responsible for breaking down the amino acids on the skin. As a byproduct of this process, the bacteria produce acids with the odor associated with the condition.

Stinky Sweat Symptoms

Some of the symptoms associated with this condition include:

  • Sour or Fruity Odor. The smell is often concentrated in areas where there are a lot of skin folds. This includes:
    • Armpit
    • Neck
    • Genital Area
    • Under the Breasts; occurs in women and men with gynecomastia.
    • Back of elbow and knee.
    • Lower back. This because sweat can pool on this area.
  • Increased amount of sweating.
  • Clothes staining. This may be due to the use of certain deodorants or due to the body chemistry.

How to Stop Stinky Sweat

There are a number of ways for people to stop stinky sweat. One of the first things they have to do is to determine which areas are prone to body odor. Once these have been identified, treatment can be targeted there.

Techniques that can help prevent body odor include:

  • Showering regularly. This should be done especially after period of heavy sweating. A fresh change of clothes should also be used.
  • Deodorant Use. These should be applied to the susceptible areas. One effective deodorant is 70% rubbing alcohol. When applied to problem areas, it can kill bacteria and keep it smell free.
