Irregular Menses Causes: How to Regularize Menstrual Periods

Question: Hi, I am 17 & my periods are very irregular (sometimes get delayed for about 2 months or more). What is the cause of this & suggest some cure (more preferably home remedies)

Causes of Irregular Menses

Hormonal imbalance is an important cause of irregular bleeding.

There are several reasons for hormonal imbalances, which include faulty dietary patterns, psychological stress and inappropriate lifestyle. Anemia and deficiency of essential vitamins can also contribute to irregular periods.

How to Regularize Periods

Here are some things you could do to regularize menstruation,

  1. Reduce the intake of caffeine, aerated drinks and junk food. Avoid highly saturated foods including butter, cheese, oily food, spicy food, etc.
  2. Ensure that you remain hydrated. Drink at least two to three liters of water each day
  3. Include fresh fruits and fresh vegetables in your diet. These will suffice the deficiencies that inappropriate diet may cause.
  4. Include supplements like Iron, Folic Acid, Vitamins and bioflavonoids in your regular regimen
  5. Exercise and yoga will help improve the balance between the body and the mind.
  6. To address to iron deficiency ensure that you consume milk and other dairy products, citrus fruits, green vegetables and eggs. Include protein rich products like cereals and pulses in your diet.

If the problem is persistent, it is best to get yourself evaluated by your gynecologist. It is possible that dietary correction will normalize the menstrual flow, but it is best to take professional advice.

    I am 35 years old unmarried female. I am having irregular periods since last two months. I have faced such problem earlier too. In between they were regular but again the same problem has reoccurred. What should I do?

      There are several reasons for irregular periods. One of the most common is imbalance of hormones as one age. However, frequently anemia also is blamed to cause irregular periods. Check your blood in a laboratory to rule out anemia. If your hemoglobin is too low, eat foods containing iron. Also you can take prescribed iron supplements if you are anemic. Banana flower is useful to regularize menses. It contains hormones in natural form which helps in woman having period problems. Boil one banana flower and eat it with butter milk for few days to find the difference.
