Technology has advanced through times and so with the medical procedures whether for health improvement or aesthetics purposes. Today, people have become more concerned about how they look physically. They are more willing to spend more than they could earn in order to correct or enhance what they perceive as a defect in their physically appearance.
Indeed this is the trend now brought about by advanced technology. There are some who are more than willing to go under the knife for the enhancement of their body part that they think is defective.
What Breast Augmentation?
It is simply a prosthesis or a cosmetic surgical procedure used to enhance the woman’s breasts for a better size and shape. There are other known terms for such procedure but boob job is the most commonly used term.
There are two most common types of breast implants that are used these days. The first one is the silicone-gel filled implants, which have silicone shell filled with viscous silicone gel. The other is the saline implants, which have silicone elastomer shell filled with sterile saline liquid.
Complications and Side Effects of Breast Augmentation
Any woman who would like to go through this kind of cosmetic surgical procedure has to consider the side effects and risks she may encounter just like any other surgery. The side effects of breast implant to women may range from minor irritation to serious adverse effect to her health. The probable side effects may be any of the following:
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia
- Severe drug interactions
- Surgical site infection
- Breast pains
- Visible wrinkling
- Shifting of the implant
- “bread loafing”
- Thinning of breast tissue
There are also other risks that women must consider when having breast implants, which would greatly affect their health and convenience in their mobility as well. One of the risks women, more specifically mothers of toddlers, must consider in having breast implant is the possibility of interference in their breast feeding to their babies.

Risks of Breast Augmentation
Another risk is the possibility of breast implants interfering in the detection of breast cancer when a mammography or any other procedure is conducted. There is a possibility that breast implants could hide suspicious tumors or lesions. Mammography also increases the risk of rupture of the silicone gel implants or saline implants since the procedure compresses the breast.
The third kind of risk that women must consider is the possibility of the rupture of breast implants. The causes of rupture of the breast implants are excessive application of pressure to the breast, trauma to the breast, or the natural aging of the implants. The rupture of breast implants could very well change the size and shape of the breast and would look like it is distorted.
The fourth risk is the loss of sensation in the nipple and breast area. This happens as the nerve endings in the nipple and breast area are damaged.
