Home Remedies for Nasal Congestion Relief: Natural Nasal Decongestant

Nasal congestion occurs when the inner lining of the nose (i.e. the mucous membrane) gets inflamed and swollen, either due to an infection or an allergy.  The mucus membrane of the nose is supplied with a network of blood vessels, and nasal congestion occurs when these blood vessels get inflamed as a result of the body’s natural immune response to allergens like dust, pollen, etc or virus and bacterial infections.

  • Tomato soup, garlic, pepper, lemon juice and salt: It is the best nasal congestion home remedy. Boil tomato soup, two cloves of garlic and 1 tsp of lemon juice and add pinch of salt.
    When the content is properly boiled, add pinch of pepper. Drink the soup when it is warm. Tomato and lemon juice contain vitamin C, garlic and pepper are irritant and help to liquefy the mucus and get it cleared.
  • Put a drop of saline water in both the nostril it is the natural nasal decongestant. Alternatively steam inhalation, with saline water and a drop of peppermint essential oil is more beneficial. Onion is another natural nasal decongestant. Smell a piece of onion, it will stimulate the nose and allow the mucus to become thin and flow easily.
  • Chicken soup is used since ancient times as a natural nasal decongestant. Chicken soup contains natural anti inflammatory property, besides the steam of hot soup unclogs the nasal passage. It makes the mucus thinner and allows it to run, making breathing easier.
  • Exercise is a natural nasal decongestant. It helps better circulation of blood. And thus shrinks the inflamed nasal membrane which causes congestion.

How To Relieve Nasal Congestion Naturally?

Nasal decongestant can be prescribed by your physician, they also work the same way as the natural nasal decongestant. The only benefit with natural nasal decongestant is they do not come with any side effects.

One of them is vitamin C; drink a glass of fresh orange juice, this citrus fruit contains a substance called bioflavanoid. It stops the inflammation of the nasal mucus membrane thus relieving from nasal congestion. Further, Vitamin C also enhances the body’s overall immune function, making you less prone to recurrent nasal congestion.

A tea from tropical herb nettles acts as an anti histamine and prevents nasal congestion. The Tannin present in tea, black tea has a natural anti inflammatory properties. It reduces inflammation of the nasal mucus membrane and relieves congestion of nose.
