Causes of Excessive Flatulence and Its Natural Treatment

Passing flatus or flatulence is a normal occurrence and is a way for a person to dispel gas which has accumulated in the intestines.

Causes of Excessive Flatulence

Foods that can increase the amount of flatus passed by an individual include:

  • Carrots, peas, corn, oat bran and celery – high sugar and high fiber foods can also increase flatulence

  • Wheat, bread, and wheat products

  • Pasta

  • Potatoes

  • Artificial Sweeteners – these have been known to increase flatulence. Patients taking diabetic medication using sugar substitutes may also experience excessive flatus.

In general, food that is high in carbohydrates, fiber, and natural sugars can greatly increase the chances of flatulence.

  • This mostly due to how the body processes these type of foods

  • High sugar foods produce a lot of gas

  • High fiber foods help increase and facilitate easy bowel movements

  • Certain foods like those from the cabbage family can also cause foul smelling flatus

Swallowing too much air is also a trigger for excessive flatulence. It is estimated that around 50% of cases can be attributed to swallowing too much air.

The following can cause a patient to swallow too much air.

  • Sucking on hard candy

  • Using a straw

  • Drinking carbonated beverages

  • Ill-fitting dentures

  • Smoking

  • Eating too fast

  • Drinking too fast

  • Swallowing often – can be common during periods of anxiety and stress

How to Treat Excessive Flatulence

  • Eat better – avoid foods that can trigger flatulence. Patients are encouraged to make a list of foods that can aggravate their condition

  • Avoid carbonated beverages

  • Avoid chewing gums and hard candies

  • Avoid using straws

  • Eat and drink slowly, chew food thoroughly

  • Have dentures fitted properly

  • Avoid artificial sweeteners when possible. Diabetic individuals can consult with their doctor regarding finding medication or sugar supplements that will not cause excessive flatus.
