There are a few distinct triggers for why a person may have dandruff but the real cause of dandruff is actually unknown. Bacteria, fungi, and even stress have been blamed for this problem, but in reality, these are mere triggers and not the real, root cause of the problem. Here are a few more dandruff triggers that are known to man:

  • Some of the more common triggers include poor hygienic practices and even sensitivity to certain hair care products. Sometimes people do not clean their scalp often enough, and this triggers the production of dandruff.
  • Increased oil production on the scalp and oily skin can also trigger the production of dandruff.
  • Sometimes emotional and mental stress can manifest itself on your scalp and skin in the form of dandruff. You may notice that at times when you are stressed from work or from home matters, flakes on your head increase.
  • There are people who suffer from dandruff because they are suffering from other ailments that produce flaking and dry patches of skin as well. Included in this list is psoriasis and eczema.
  • While oily skin and oily scalp can produce dandruff, the opposite is also true. Dry skin can also create the flakes on your skin and scalp that is called dandruff.

Causes of Dandruff

Factors responsible for the growth of excess flakes on scalp are sebum, seborrheic dermatitis, and improper hair care. When growth of Malassezia fungus on scalp goes out of control extra skin cells die and get mixed with oil from the hair resulting in dandruff. Cause of dandruff in women is hormonal imbalance taking place during menstruation which results in excess oil production on scalp. Other reasons for dandruff are neurological diseases, weak immune system, and reaction to hair and skin products.
